Who are the British Horse Society?

The British Horse Society is the most influential charity within the equestrian industry. Founded in 1947, the BHS has grown a membership of over 115,000 members with the aim to protect and promote the interests of all horses and those who care about them.

The British Horse Society has some core foundations which include education, welfare, access and safety. This includes;

  • Welfare services to horses and advice for owners
  • Campaigning for and protecting equestrian rights of way
  • Improving safety for horses, riders and carriage drivers
  • Promoting riders for all
  • Offering world-class qualifications
  • Approvals system to awarding quality instruction and care

What do the British Horse Society do?

The BHS provide a wealth of information, knowledge, advice and standards across the equestrian industry. They also provides training and qualifications for instructors/coaches, grooms and professional riders.

Get involved with the BHS

There are a number of different ways you can get involved with the British Horse Society depending on your needs, requirements and what you are looking for.

Become a member of the British Horse Society

Firstly, you are able to become a BHS member through one of their membership schemes. Their most popular membership is the BHS Gold Membership which you can access for just £7 per month. The BHS Gold Membership offers your public liability insurance of up to £30 million and personal accident insurance of up to £10,000.

As a Gold Member you will also be entitled to expert advice on a range of equestrian issues as well as legal support. You will also be supporting the charitable work of the BHS which aims to improve horse welfare and the care and safety of every horse and rider.

Simultaneously, you will also get free and discounted tickets to leading equestrian events throughout the year, as well as free subscription to the British Horse magazine. You also get to be a member of an equestrian community with over 115,000 members plus more!

Volunteering for the BHS

The second method you can do to get involved with the British Horse Society is by becoming a volunteer. The BHS has over 1000 volunteers who help make a difference in their local areas. Volunteering efforts can include organising a local event, attending a welfare concern, educating road users on horse and rider safety, volunteering at a BHM show stand or helping to preserve off road riding routes.
