What is a Girth, and what is a Girth used for?

A girth is a piece of tack that goes underneath the horse, which attaches at either end to a saddle via the girth straps or 'billets'. Different styles of girths have a variety of purposes. Largely the role of a girth is to hold the saddle on the horse and keep it in the correct position.

Traditionally, much like saddles and bridles, girths have been made from leather with metal buckles at either end. Other materials of girths include string, synthetic materials, and cotton. Some girths have elastic on them. Which if used correctly can be beneficial. Here at The Saddle Bank always recommend only using girths with either no elastic or elastic at both ends. When girths have only one side that is elastic, this causes the tension to be uneven, and can make your saddle slip. Where a girth has elastic at both ends, this can make it easy to overtighten, so this is something to bear in mind when tacking up.

Girths are available in different lengths, which are normally divided into two main subsets of measurement, “long” and “short”; these are made for certain billet length and positions. For example, a monoflap saddle with girth straps lower on the horse’s body are designed to be used with a short girth. The lower anchor points on the billets can provide additional stability for the saddle.

Girths are available in an array of shapes as well as lengths; stud girths, straight girths, and anatomical girths are just a few examples of different shapes; which serve a variety of purposes for the horse. Anatomical girths can be used to prevent the girth from slipping forward on the horse. Due to its design complementing the contours of the horse’s underside. While a stud girth has a wide area of coverage to help prevent injury to the horse from hoof studs or shoes when jumping.

What are some of the features of a Wintec Girth?

There have never been more options when it comes to choosing a girth then available to equestrians today. So why might a Wintec girth be right for you and your horse? Wintec are renowned for their synthetic materials from which their products are manufactured. This makes their girths affordable and durable, not to mention super easy to clean. The girth area on the horse is often the sweatiest after exercise. It also gets the most dirt or arena surface kicked up to it. So it’s important to keep your girth clean.

Leather needs to be regularly fed and treated in addition to cleaning to keep it in tip-top condition. While a synthetic girth such as a Wintec can be easily cleaned and dried without worry. Even the metal buckles and fixings on Wintec Girths are made of stainless steel. So you can find comfort in knowing that your girth won’t rust and is overall very easy to maintain.

The anti-chafe shape can be a game changer for horses with sensitive skin. Although really all horses can benefit from the increased comfort; the anti-chafe aspect comes from the extra relief room around the part of the girth which sits behind the elbow, so when the horse is on the go, the elbow won’t be hitting or rubbing on the girth. The Wintec elastic girth is elasticated along the entire length of the girth. This is especially important to help evenly distribute pressure around the horse, so no areas are tighter than others. Wintec are able to offer a really inclusive range of girths, comprising of long and short types in a variety of sizes, with most available in black and brown so you can match your girth to the rest of your tack. Wintec also carry an anatomical girth, complete with a d-ring for attaching a breastplate or martingale.

While Wintec don’t currently offer a stud girth, they do offer a stud girth attachment. Which can slide onto a girth to provide the same protection and coverage one may want from a stud girth. If you already have a girth, this is a great way of getting extra protection without having to buy an entirely new bit of tack. In general Wintec are able to offer their products at very affordable prices, making them hugely accessible to a wide range of equestrians. So no matter what your budget is, you can still get a quality, versatile product that suits your horse.
