Amerigo Saddles

Amerigo saddles are renowned for their exceptional craftsmanship, innovative design, and superior performance. These saddles are meticulously crafted in Italy using the finest materials and advanced technologies to ensure optimal comfort and functionality for both horse and rider.

One feature of Amerigo saddles is their unique saddle codes. The serial number on Amerigo saddles provide valuable information about the saddle’s specifications and fit. Understanding these saddle codes is essential for riders and saddle fitters to ensure they select the right saddle for their horse's needs. However, they can easily confuse people if you do not know what you are looking at. In this article we will help you understand how to read and decode Amerigo saddle serial numbers. This will help you if you are looking to sell, or buy an Amerigo saddle to check to see if is the correct fit for your horse.

What do the Amerigo saddle codes mean?

Amerigo saddle codes consist of a series of letters and numbers that convey specific details about the saddle’s tree width, seat size, flap length, and other important measurements. Each code is designed to provide comprehensive information about the saddle and provide a unique number so the saddle can be identified by the supplier and manufacturer.

Tree Width

The tree width is a crucial factor in determining how well the saddle fits the horse’s back. The Amerigo saddle codes often include letters and numbers;  M (medium/Standard), +1 (medium wide), +2 (wide), or -1 (narrow medium) to indicate the tree width. The width can be change by 0.5 cm up or down so some horses might need a +1.5 width (medium wide-wide) or -0.5 (medium-narrow medium).

Seat Size

The seat size refers to the size of the saddle’s seat, which should correspond to the rider’s measurements for optimal comfort and balance. The seat size is usually denoted by a number in the saddle code, such as 17 (17 inches), 17.5 (17.5 inches), or 18 (18 inches).

Flap Length

The flap length is an important consideration for riders, especially those with longer or shorter legs. Amerigo saddle codes often include letters like PY (pony/junior) K (short), N (standard), L (long), or XL (extra long) to indicate the flap length.

Manufacture Date

At the end of the saddles serial number is 3-4 digits which identify the month and year the saddle was manufactured, if the saddle was manufactured prior to 2010 it will be 3 digits 2010 onwards it is 4 digits for example 0418 is April 2018.

Panel depth

There are three panel options on Dressage saddles and two on jump saddles. M is standard which is 4 soft. Number 4 are Standard panels so if it says 4 or M this is standard. Number 2 is slimmer panels that are more in line with the tree. Number 6 panels are designed with older or higher withered horses in mind, they are the most compensatory panel offering more depth to help balance the saddle on a higher withered horse. Jump saddles are available with either 4 or 2 panels whereas dressage saddles can be either  2, 4 or 6 panels.

Amerigo Saddle Model Codes

Each model of Amerigo saddle has its own unique code to help saddle fitters understand which model it is.

The start of the saddle code will always begin with either a D, DR, S or J.
D and DR is for Dressage, all dressage models will start with a D or DR.
S is for Salto (jump in Italian!) J is for Jump, all jump models will begin with either S or J.

The next letter ot two is the model for example if the saddle is a Farouche Jump Saddle the code will start JF for Jump Farouche or SF for Salto Farouche.

If it is the DJ Jump Saddle is is JDJ or SDJ.

Next is A for Amerigo, all codes feature an A for Amerigo.

There are however an exception with models in the saddle code, this is the Classic Dressage, the standard code for this model is DA so it is Dressage Amerigo for the Classic.

The next letter if the saddle is a monoflap will be M, if there is no M in the code then the saddle is a dual flap model.

If the saddle has a surface block the code will feauture an S or SI for Siena on models such as the Classic the S or SI comes before the A.

Followed by letter or two letters may be SW or W, if the saddle code features this then the saddle has a more forward cut flap.

If the last letter or two are P or PI this stands for the leather type used so Pinerolo

So if we use the previous example of the Classic Dressage. If this model is then also a monoflap with the forward cut flaps on Pinerolo leather the code would be DAMWP.
