Kent and Masters / Thorowgood Gullet Bars – Which one do you need?
Kent and Masters / Thorowgood Gullet Bars – Which one do you need?
Many people get confused over which gullet bar they need when trying to alter the size of their Kent and Masters or Thorowgood Saddle. There is a very simple method of knowing which gullet bar is required for your Kent and Masters or Thorowgood saddle, and whether you need an R bar or S Bar. But firstly, lets discuss the gullet bars.
The Two Types of Gullet Bar
There are two types of gullet bar available. The S Bar, and the R Bar.
The S bar is the shorter one, whereas the R Bar is the longer one. You cannot fit a S Bar into a saddle which only takes the R Bar.
The S Bar is more suited to Pony, Cob, Flat back and Original jump saddles and goes from Narrow Medium to XXW.
The R Bar, doesn’t quite go so large, however if you need the XXW gullet bar its likely that the Cob model would be more suitable for your horses shape. The R bar is found in the standard wither and high wither saddles both dressage and GP.
Now... the one thing you need to remember is this...
S Bars for Square Cantle Saddles
R Bars for Round Cantle Saddles
It’s that simple! Really!
There is no need to get confused!
The Exception to the Rule
There are two exceptions to the rule. The first is the Kent and Masters S Series jump saddle (Adult sizes stamped MJJ), and Thorowgood T8 Jump saddle (labelled MJJ) which takes the R Bar. This model is neither round not square cantle so can sometimes confuse people. Just check the stamp/label and if stamped MJJ it is a R Bar saddle.
The latest exception to the rule is the newest S-Series Low Wither GP. This saddle does have a round cantle but actually takes the shorter S bars. However, it is important to note that not all of the low profile models(such as the LGC Low Profile Compact GP) take the S bar. Most take the R bar. It is just this one single model.
Otherwise, you stick to S Bars for Square cantles, and R bars for round cantles!
Kent and Masters couldn’t have made it easier for us could they!
How to change a gullet bar
It is always recommended that you seek the advise of a professional saddle fitter when it comes to saddle fit. However, in some cases that is just not possible for those who live in extremely remote conditions with no access to a saddle fitter. Changing a gullet bar in a Kent and Masters or Thorowgood saddle is super simple and easy.
