How to change the gullet bar in a Cavaletti Collection saddle

Cavaletti Collection are a UK brand of english horse saddle offer different models to suit different disciplines suit as the Monoflap Jump, Dual flap dressage, Show saddle, and GP saddle to name a few. Cavaletti also offer a range of matching accessories which are good quality and fairly priced. Cavaletti Collection saddles offer an affordable range of leather and synthetic saddles adjustable from Narrow Medium to XXW.

When purchasing an adjustable gullet saddle, we recommend taking 2 spare gullet bar widths to make any necessary alterations to the saddle during your trial, and as the horse changes shape throughout the year.

Lets look in more detail about the adjustability of Cavaletti Collection saddles.

Which Cavaletti saddles feature an adjustable gullet?

All Cavaletti saddles feature the Cavaletti Collection unique, one-of-a-kind interchanging gullet system with 6 optional widths to suit your horse.

Adjustable trees have become increasingly popular in recent years for their ease of swapping the width of the saddle, should your horse change shape. There is no need to crank the saddle on a machine (eeekk!) or to find yourself without a saddle whilst you send it away to a manufacturer for adjustment. With the Cavaletti Collection interchangeable gullet system, you can simply purchase the bar in the size you need and swap it out yourself, or your fitter will do it for you!

What size gullet bar do i need for my horse?

If you are unsure what size width your horse is there are a number of ways you can find out. Firstly, speak to your saddle fitter if you think your horse has changed widths. Your fitter will be able to take templates and check the width for you. Alternatively, you can take templates of your horse yourself. Check out our fabulous how-to-guide on how to take templates and further information on where to buy a Flexi curve can be found here.

Our fabulous customer service team are also on hand to assist, once you have the template of 3 fingers behind the scapula (shoulder blade) you can send this over to info@thesaddlebank.com and our team will assess the width of your horse from the template. Our team can then direct you to the size of the bar you need.

With adjustable saddles, The Saddle Bank always recommends purchasing a couple of sizes. If you think your horse is a Medium Wide, take a Medium and a Wide bar as well. This will enable you to alter the width quickly should your horse change shape throughout the year.

How to change the gullet bar in your Cavaletti saddle

Here we will look at each step to remove and replace the gullet bar in Cavaletti adjustable saddles.

Removing the bar

Once you have the correct bar for your Cavaletti saddle, you will need to remove the current bar:

  1. Undo the bolts at the front of each panel
  2. Slide each panel off the point of the tree
  3. Fold back the flap covering the gullet bar
  4. Undo the bolts holding the gullet bar in place (2 each side)
  5. Remove the gullet bar

Replacing the bar

  1. Ensuring the bar is the correct way round (note the angled ends - the angled side should be at the front) lay the bar in place and line up the holes
  2. Insert the bolts, doing them up loosely to begin with
  3. Once all four bolts are in, tighten each one firmly
  4. Replace the flap of leather over the bar
  5. Insert the ends of the bars back into their 'pockets', ensuring all girth straps are laying flat and the right way around
  6. Replace the bolts at the front of the panel, tightening each one firmly
