What are Saddle Pads and Numnahs?

Saddle pads and numnahs are used with the saddle to provide cushioning and protection between the horse's back and the saddle. They serve several purposes:

  1. Moisture Wicking: Many saddle pads and numnahs are made from materials that wick away moisture from the horse's back, keeping the skin dry and preventing sweat-related issues.

  2. Protection: The pads act as a protective barrier between the horse's back and the saddle, preventing friction and rubbing that could lead to sores or hair loss.

  3. Keeping the saddle clean: Saddle Pads and numnahs also keep the saddle panels and underside clean, sweat, dirt and grease free.
  4. Correct Saddle Fit: Saddle pads can be used to adjust the fit of a saddle. They can compensate for slight differences in saddle size or shape, ensuring a more comfortable and secure fit for the horse. Typically saddle pads used to correct fit often have shim inserts which can be used or removed as required.

  5. Temperature Regulation: Some pads are designed to provide additional insulation in colder weather, while others have breathable properties for use in warmer climates. This helps in maintaining the horse's comfort.

  6. Shock Absorption: Some saddle pads and numnahs are claim to be designed to absorb shock and distribute pressure, reducing the impact of the rider's weight and the movement of the saddle on the horse's back. This helps prevent discomfort and potential soreness.
