The Thorowgood T4 GPD

The Thorowgood T4 GPD saddle has been and still is apopular choice among horse riders for its adjustablity and comfort. However the T4 GPD model has been discontinued by Thorowgood so are becoming more difficult to come by. In this blog post, we will explore the Thorowgood T4 and T8 ranges, look at the features of the T4 GPD saddle, and suggest alternative options available currently that might be suitable for you and your horse.

The Thorowgood T4 and T8 Ranges

Thorowgood is a world renowned brand in the equestrian world known for producing high-quality synthetic saddles. They currently offer two main ranges: T4 and T8.

1. Thorowgood T4 Range

The T4 range by Thorowgood is designed to provide riders with a comfortable and affordable saddle option. These saddles are made using synthetic materials, which offer several advantages such as durability, easy maintenance, lightweight and affordability. The T4 range includes various models designed for different disciplines and horse/pony conformations.

2. Thorowgood T8 Range

The T8 range by Thorowgood is an upgrade from the T4 range, offering additional features and enhancements. These saddles are constructed using a combination of synthetic materials and leather, providing a more premium feel while maintaining durability. The T8 range also includes models suited for different disciplines and horse/pony conformations.

The Features of the Thorowgood T4 GPD Saddle

The Thorowgood T4 GPD saddle was specifically designed for riders who prefer a sligtly straighter cut dressage biased General Purpose (GP) saddle that can be used for flatwork, hacking and low level jumping. It was suitable for horses with a 'standard' wither, it also came in a High Withered version the HGD. Here are some notable features of the T4 GPD saddle:

  1. Adjustable Gullet System: The saddle comes with an adjustable gullet system, allowing riders to modify the width of the saddle to accommodate different horse sizes and shapes, the GPD take the R bars which are available in widths from NM up to XW-XXW,

  2. Synthetic Materials: The T4 GPD saddle is made from synthetic materials, making it lightweight and easy to clean. Synthetic saddles are also less prone to damage caused by weather conditions.
    Note. Thorowgood T4 saddles should not be cleaned with traditional soap or oil.

  3. Comfortable Seat: The saddle features a deep GP seat with supportive knee rolls, providing you with a secure and comfortable position.

  4. Wool Flocked Panels: The T4 GPD saddle has wool flocked panels so your saddle fitter can make quick adjsutments to the saddle during your fitting to get the best fit for your horse. Ensuring even weight distribution and minimizing pressure points.

  5. Versatile Design: The saddle is suitable for various riding activities, including flatwork, hacking and low level jumping.

  6. Moveable Blocks: Like all the T4 models the GPD and HGD feature moveable blocks so you can get the best position to suit you.

Removal of the Thorowgood T4 GPD and HGD Models.

Thorowgood discontinued the T4 GPD and HGD models from their range of saddles back in 2011. While the exact reason for discontinuation of these models was not given at the time, companies often make changes to their product lines based on market demand, manufacturing considerations, or the introduction of new models.

Alternative Options

If you were considering the Thorowgood T4 GPD saddle but find that it is no longer available, there are several alternative options worth exploring:

  1. Wintec AP: Wintec offers a range of all-purpose saddles that provide similar versatility to the Thorowgood T4 GPD. The Wintec 500 All Purpose saddle is also a synthetic saddle and features an adjustable gullet system and a comfortable seat suitable for various riding disciplines.

  2. Kent and Masters Universal GPD: Kent and Masters offer the full leather S-Series Universal GPD saddle, which is designed for riders seeking a versatile saddle option. It features an adjustable gullet system and a supportive seat for optimal rider comfort.

  3. Bates VSD: Bates Saddles produces the VSD All Purpose saddle, which combines elements of both dressage and all purpose saddles. This saddle offers adjustability through the Easy Change Fit Solution system and provides a secure seat for riders.

While these alternative options may not be identical to the Thorowgood T4 GPD, they offer similar features and versatility that could meet your requirements.
