If you own a Thorowgood saddle, you may find that the gullet bar needs to be changed to accommodate different horses or to ensure a proper fit as your horse changes shape throughout the year or its lifetime. The gullet bar is an essential component of the saddle that provides stability and comfort for the horse. Changing the gullet bar can be a straightforward process if done correctly. In this blog post, we will walk you through the steps to change the gullet bars on your Thorowgood saddle.

Which bar do you need?

First you will need to check whether you need an R-bar (long) or an S-bar (short).

  • R-bars fit high-headed trees with long points and a round cantle.
  • S-bars fit lower headed trees with shorter points and a square cantle.

Have you got everything you need to change the gullet bar?

Once you know which gullet bar it is you need and the correct width it's time to change your gullet bar.

Before you begin make sure you have all the necessary tools at hand. This will make it much quicker and easier for you once you have started.

For your adjustable Thorowgood saddle all you will need is an allen key and the replacement gullet bar that is the correct width for your horse.

Removing the bar

Once you have the correct bar, you will need to remove the current bar from the saddle:

  • Step One: Undo the two outer bolts.
  • Step Two: Slide each panel off the point of the tree
  • Step Three: Fold back the flap covering the gullet bar
  • Step Four: Undo the bolts holding the gullet bar in place (2 each side)
  • Step Five: Remove the gullet bar
Note: Take care not to lose any small components such as washers or bolts during this process.

Replacing the bar

Once the old gullet bar has been removed, it’s time to insert the new one.

  • Step One: Ensuring the bar is the correct way round (note the angled ends and the indented shape in the head of the tree) lay the bar in place and line up the holes
  • Step Two: Carefully insert the bolts, doing them up loosely to begin with using the allen key
  • Step Three: Once all four bolts are in, tighten each one firmly and replace the flap of leather over the bar
  • Step Four: Insert the ends of the bars back into their ‘pockets’, ensuring all girth straps are laying flat and the right way around
  • Step Five: Replace the bolts at the front of the panel, tightening each one firmly using the allen key but be mindful to not over tighten them so much that you can't undo them next time you need to change your gullet bar!

Final Checks on your saddle

Is the gullet bar secure?

After fitting the new gullet bar, it’s important to check for stability and proper alignment. Ensure that the gullet bar is securely fastened and does not move or shift when pressure is applied. This step is crucial for the safety and comfort of both rider and horse.

Checking the fit

Before riding your horse/pony with your newly fitted gullet bar, perform a test fit on your horse. Check for any signs of discomfort or pressure points that may indicate an improper fit. You may need to speak to your fitter if you feel there are any issues or any further adjustments needed, such as adding flocking etc.

Conclusion

We always recommend to have a qualified saddle fitter out to assess the fit of your horses saddle at least every 6 months. However, we understand that for some clients who live very remotely, this is not always possible. Changing the gullet bars on your Thorowgood saddle is a simple process that can greatly impact your horse’s comfort and performance. By following these steps and ensuring a proper fit, you can provide your horse with a comfortable and secure riding experience.
