GP saddles are designed to allow riders to slightly shorten their stirrup leathers to jump small jumps or lengthen their stirrups to school the horse on the flat. GP saddles are traditionally semi-deep seated, often with round cantles. However, if looking for a cob GP saddle, you may find it has a flatter, more open seat or a square cantle to offer the rider a less restricted feel, particularly on a cob with a shorter back.
GP saddles are ideal for those who are novices or prefer to do a bit of everything. Some prefer discipline-specific saddles as they begin to jump larger or compete at dressage. However, a general-purpose saddle is a great all-rounder saddle for everyday use. GP saddles are all dual flap, offering fixed or moveable knee blocks. Some GP saddles also offer various girthing options, such as point and balance straps, which enable the saddle to be fitted to the horse correctly. With rounder types like cobs and wider breeds, the balance strap is often required and used to help stabilise the saddle on a horse where saddles often slip to one side or both.
Consider your horse's back profile when looking for a Cob GP saddle. If your horse is broad yet has a higher wither, you may need a deeper rear gusset and fuller drop panels to accommodate the wither profile. If you have a broad cob-type horse, you will be looking for a saddle with slimmer panels, a wider channel for a broader spine and, ideally, a tree suited to rounder shapes. Popular cob GP saddles include the Monarch Cob GP, Kent and Masters Cob GP, Bates WIDE all Purpose, Wintec 500 Wide, and the Arena Cob GP. Some manufacturers, such as Chunky Monkey and Black Country, also offer trees specific for cob types called Hoop trees. Instead of a V shape through the head of the tree, they are more U-shaped, allowing a more generous opening at the head of the tree.
