GP saddles are commonly used by everyday riders who enjoy flatwork, jumping and hacking. General Purpose, sometimes called All Purpose, enables the rider to achieve a standard position.
GP saddles are designed to allow a rider to slightly shorten their stirrup leathers to jump small jumps or to lengthen their stirrups to school the horse on the flat. They are traditionally semi-deep-seated, often with round cantles.
GP saddles are ideal for novices or those who prefer to do a bit of everything. Some prefer discipline-specific saddles as they begin to jump larger or compete at dressage. However, a general-purpose saddle is a great all-rounder saddle for everyday use. GP saddles are all dual flap, offering fixed or moveable knee blocks. Some GP saddles also offer various girthing options, such as point and balance straps, which enable the saddle to be fitted to the horse correctly.
You should also consider your horse's back profile. If your horse has a higher wither, you may need something with a deeper rear gusset and fuller drop panels. The deeper rear gusset will help balance the saddle on a horse with a higher wither, and the drop panel will provide a larger weight-bearing area to lift the saddle up and away from the horse's withers. Drop panels are also great on horses with hollows or muscle atrophy behind the wither. Thoroughbreds are one breed commonly known for having high withers as part of their conformation. However, some horses may have a high wither with a flat back; a high wither with a standard back profile, or a high wither and a curved back. Therefore, you need to consider the wither profile and the shape of the horse's back.
