The Saddle Bank are proud to offer the world’s largest selection of quality new and used secondhand general-purpose saddles. GP saddles are commonly used by everyday riders who enjoy flatwork, jumping and hacking. General Purpose, sometimes called All Purpose, enables the rider to achieve a standard position.
GP saddles are designed to allow riders to slightly shorten their stirrup leathers to jump small jumps or to lengthen their stirrups to school the horse on the flat. They are traditionally semi-deep-seated, often with round cantles.
When looking for a GP saddle on a budget, it is important to consider your horse's needs over price. There is a huge selection of competitively priced GP saddles available on the market. However, the fit for your horse should not be compromised. When selecting a GP saddle, you should consider the following;
• the wither profile of your horse (medium, high or low)
• the back shape of your horse (average, flat, curved)
• the back length of your horse (many people ride in saddles too long for their horse and cause the horse pain)
• the current and expected condition of the horse (does the horse have any muscle wastage, and is the horse likely to regain the muscle or is it due to age)
• position of the girth groove (is the girth groove forward/average)
• any other conformation issues (herring gutted/roach backed etc.)
GP saddles are ideal for novices or those who prefer to do a bit of everything. Some people prefer discipline-specific saddles as they begin to jump larger or compete at dressage. However, a general-purpose saddle is a great all-rounder saddle for everyday use. GP saddles are all dual flap, offering either fixed or moveable knee blocks. Some GP saddles also offer various girthing options, such as point and balance straps, which enable the saddle to be fitted to the horse correctly.
You should also consider your horse's back profile. If your horse has a higher wither, you may need something with a deeper rear gusset and fuller drop panels. Some great high wither GP saddles include the Thorowgood HGP high wither GP, Kent and Masters HGP high wither GP, Albion K2 GP, Arena High Wither GP, and the GFS Monarch Apex GP. If your horse has a very flat back, you need a saddle suited to a flatter-backed horse, such as the Kent and Masters MGU Flat Back, Bates All Purpose, and Wintec All Purpose. However, it is worth noting that Bates and Wintec saddles can also be customised to fit horses with various back shapes using the Easy Change Risers. If you have a broad cob-type horse, you will be looking for a saddle with slimmer panels, a wider channel for a broader spine and, ideally, a tree suited to rounder shapes. Popular cob GP saddles include the Monarch Cob GP, Kent and Masters Cob GP, Bates WIDE all Purpose, Wintec 500 Wide, and the Arena Cob GP.
Whether your budget is £400 or £3500, The Saddle Bank has a fantastic selection of GP saddles available to purchase with a 5-day UK trial.
